9 Tips for Jewelry Care and Cleaning

1. Gently wipe your jewelry with a smooth, soft, 100% cotton cloth after each wearing to clean any make-up or skin oil residues. Don't use paper, polyester, or other coarse fabrics to clean jewelry, as these might leave behind fine scratches.

2. If dirt and oils have built up on sterling silver jewelry, soak them in a solution of mild liquid soap and warm water for a couple of minutes, rinse with clean water, and dry thoroughly. Then wrap the pieces in soft cotton cloth to minimize tarnish.

3. Never use toothpaste or abrasive metal cleaners on softer metals such as silver and stones like opal.

4. Clean your fine jewelry items by soaking them for 10 minutes in a solution of water and mild, non-detergent soap. Use a soft brush on harder gems to loosen any dirt around the prongs.

5. To reduce greasy build-up on diamond jewelry pieces, dip them in plain alcohol or vodka before soaking them in warm soapy water. You can use a soft brush to clean stubborn dirt.

6. Don't wear fine jewelry while gardening or doing housework. By saving your finer pieces for special occasions, you'll keep them looking like new for generations to come.

7. Be sure to check for loose stones in your fine jewelry periodically by gently tapping the pieces with your finger. Place a piece of cloth or napkin underneath so it'll catch any loose stone and prevent it from rolling away.

8. If you wear your pearls regularly, have them restrung annually or every two years to prevent breakage of the string.

9. Never heap your jewelry into one drawer. It might scratch softer metals and stones. Choose from one of our lovely jewelry boxes to keep your jewelry separate and organized.
